Reflection on Matthew 15:21–28
In today`s Gospel, we meet a Canaanite woman who comes to Jesus desperate for help. Her daughter is suffering, and she cries out to Him for mercy. At first, Jesus seems silent, and even the disciples want her sent away. Yet she refuses to give up.
Her persistence is extraordinary. She believes that Jesus can help her, and even when the conversation becomes difficult, her faith remains strong. Finally, Jesus says to her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” Her daughter is healed.
This woman teaches us something important about prayer. There may be times when we pray and God seems silent. We may wonder whether our prayers have been heard at all. Yet faith encourages us to continue to keep knocking, keep asking, and keep trusting.
The Gospel also reminds us that God’s love reaches beyond the boundaries that human beings so often create. The woman was considered an outsider, yet her faith brought her into a profound encounter with Christ. God’s mercy is not limited by nationality, background, status, or circumstance.
Perhaps the greatest lesson of this passage is simply: do not give up on God. Even when the answer seems delayed, even when the road becomes difficult, continue to trust.
May we have the courage and persistence of this woman, bringing our needs before Christ and trusting that His mercy is greater than any barrier we may face.
