Reflection on Matthew 10:37–42
In today's Gospel, Jesus reminds us that following Him requires commitment. His words may sound challenging as He calls His disciples to place their love for God above every other attachment. This does not mean loving our families any less; rather, it means allowing our love for Christ to shape every relationship and every decision we make.
Jesus also speaks of taking up our cross. The cross represents the sacrifices, struggles, and acts of faithfulness that come with living as His disciples. While the path of discipleship is not always easy, it is through surrendering our lives to Christ that we discover true life. As Jesus tells us, those who lose their life for His sake will find it.
The Gospel concludes with a beautiful reminder that no act of kindness is ever too small. Even offering a cup of cold water to someone in need is noticed by God and has lasting value. Our faith is lived not only in extraordinary moments but also in simple acts of generosity, compassion, hospitality, and love.
This passage invites us to examine our priorities. Is Christ at the centre of our lives? Do our words and actions reflect His love? As we seek to follow Him each day, may we embrace both the challenges and the joys of discipleship, trusting that every sacrifice made in love brings us closer to the heart of God.
